I spent spring 2011 in the darkness of Sapphire Rooms, an Edinburgh lap-dance bar on Lothian Road. I wasn’t interested in ‘happy’ or ‘sad’ stereotypes, my aim was to photograph women as women and neglect the more public representation that strippers usually have. We shared stories in the dressing room where most photographs were taken. I thought their private space was more interesting then photographing acrobatic dances around the pole. I tried to “read” the subtitles, what was actually happening underneath the fake tan and beyond the smoke machine.
