Women at War showcases the active role women play in conflicts, challenging the image of women as helpless victims. The exhibition gives a moving and thought-provoking perspective on the female experience of conflict, whether as survivors, fighters, victims or agents of peace. It features powerful images of female fighters of the Peshmerga in Iraq from Middle East-based photographer Jacob Russell, of Israeli and Palestinian women from American photographer Heidi Levine, and images from around the world from the International Committee of the Red Cross’ Collection.

Also featured are Saudi Arabian artist Manal Al Dowayan’s  I AM images. These explore the tensions arising from increasing numbers of Saudi women entering the workforce. The argument that women should only work in jobs “suited to their nature” is questioned.

The exhibition continues at Summerhall until the 31st of October http://www.summerhall.co.uk/2015/women-at-war/
